Spotlight On Music Promoters

A Music Promoters job can have many variables, depending on when and where they operate, the acts they are working with, and the scale of the operation. Typical duties include negotiating event dates, and any payment for promoters/bands, insurance requirements, booking the bands themselves, organising sound requirements for the acts, booking DJ’s, publicising the event, selling tickets, and making sure everything runs smoothly on the night. Larger scale events could also involve the promoter designing sets, booking road crew, organising a tour itinerary (what will happen where/when), booking hotels and travel arrangements, and liaison with record labels/management.

Although a list of tasks can sound a little mundane, anyone who has had even a small amount of experience in promoting, will agree this is one job in the music business that is anything but everyday and routine. Music Business texts commonly talk about promoting as being a high risk profession, but done well it can also be very rewarding and enjoyable; you shouldn’t just take our word for it though!

There’s only one sure fire way to give you further insight into the world of concert promoting, and that’s to go right to the front line ourselves, and speak to those involved in the business.

First up we spoke to Jodie Newman from Crazy Pug Promotions. Jodie has been involved in promoting in some form or another since attending college, and after a break from the music scene, is now back with a vengeance, and looking forward to a future full of Crazy Pug gigs. Read her interview here.

We also spoke to Shakey of Shakster Records, a promoter who is very well known on the Essex music scene, especially in Chelmsford. Shakey has been putting on gig nights in local venues for quite some time, and always attracts a good crowd.
