There is not much in the world that a person would want to learn that the answer is not "just start" when asked what do I need to do first. Guitar is no different. The only thing I can tell you is the less that you do not learn incorrectly, the less you will have to unlearn down the road. So read up on it, as your friends, watch some free videos online and most importantly, have fun!

When I first started learning guitar I got onto YouTube and watched a guy trying to teach me finger positioning. Then I got onto a few basic websites and learned the chords. I already knew a fair amount about chord sequencing from playing keyboards so the rest was just practice practice practice

I would recommend buying a song book with songs you like and are familiar with (nothing too hard mind, Oasis, early Beatles, Travis), buying a chord book then work your way through the song book. learn chords as you come across them and once you grasp the basics and start having a bit of fun with it you can learn the 'boring' bits as you progress (scales, how to hold a plectrum properly).

I realise this may seem backward to some people but learning how to correctly hold a plectrum or learning scales when you don't even know any songs you can incorporate them into is boring and a fairly sure-fire way of losing patience and giving it up.
