Well I might be a big fan of X Factor, but it’s also nice to sit back, relax, and listen to something not associated with one of our most successful talent shows. Today I have the absolute pleasure of reviewing Rachael Sage, and her new single ‘Too Many Women’.

Rachael Sage isn’t a name that’s familiar to me, but after one listen of her song, I was pretty sure I wanted to hear more of this American singer-songwriter. Too Many Women is one of the best songs I’ve heard in a long time, although I have to confess I’m a little envious that it appears on the new Fame movie soundtrack (as a lyricist, a film placement is a big dream of mine). It’s easy for me to get caught up in piano led pop songs, and this one has a really nice melody. The piano is laced with some quirky folk beats, and catchy drums which sets the mood. Over the top of this comes Rachael’s distinctive vocal, at times soulful and polished, then at others displaying an almost playful folk edge. I would agree that it does bare a little resemblance to artists such as Tori Amos, but would also add Sheryl Crow and Natalie Imbruglia into the mix. Comparisons aside, she is a unique artist, a self taught pianist, and a singer who to my mind deserves the public acclaim she’s so far received.

Rachael Sage gets my vote as one to watch in 2010, and I very much hope that we here at music.co.uk, and the rest of the UK audience, will get to hear much more from her in the future.
