‘Ali Campbell – Everways/She’s A Lady’ single review
by Rich Olding. Published August 26, 2009.
Many of you will remember Ali Campbell as the former front man of UB40. The singer has now released his third solo album ‘Flying High’, a mix of original tracks and collaboration work. The 31st August will see the release of the double A side ‘Everways’ & ‘She’s a Lady’, featuring two of the aforementioned collaborators, Shaggy and Craig David.

Ali Campbell - Flying High
Everway’s epitomises what reggae is all about, upbeat, and with a bucket load of feeling to boot. Campbell and David’s voices harmonise perfectly and for once, I find myself able to happily listen to the R&B artist without cringing. The track is cheerful, easy to listen to, and has a bouncy feel-good vibe. A great summer tune.
Everyone will recognise the second track ‘She’s a Lady’, famously sung by Tom Jones. Campbell puts his own twist on the track and, believe it or not, it does work well. The song has a slightly melodramatic feel to it, and the sparring between Shaggy and Campbell works well. It’s a nice modern effort that stands up well to the original.
It’s no surprise that Campbell reached #13 on ‘Flying High’s release, having amounted over forty top 40 singles previously. The double A-Side release is great fun, while veering from his previous work, towards a more traditional reggae sound.
