Christmas Retreat: The Library Suits

by Lauren John. Published December 7, 2009.

It seems that releasing a debut single and album, and appearing on The Hollyoaks Music Show is not quite enough for those busy Library Suits boys, they like a new challenge, and this time it means a possible assault on the Christmas Charts. I have to admit that the race for Christmas Number One is no longer what it once was, and I kind of miss the previews of all the songs, which always included a few tongue in cheek festive ditty’s. Now though the might of X Factor, and Simon Cowell has taken over the festive charts, and it all gets a bit boring!

Will 2009 be any different, it’s difficult to see at the moment, but big Kudo’s go to The Library Suits for writing a new, and very catchy Christmas tune, and giving me something nice and seasonal to review. Christmas Retreat is a well crafted indie/rock tune, which is, I suspect, vaguely infulenced by The Darkness and their festive effort. The lyrics are surprisingly accurate, and are sure to get even the most hardened ‘Bah Humbug’ type singing along. The music is very infectious, and really captures the spirit of Christmas too. All in all, it’s great fun, and it comes complete with a few bonus tracks too. The B-Sides are a full band and acoustic version of radio friendly ‘Jeremy Kyles Inner Valkyrie’. This is the song that got The Library Suits to the final 9 of the Hollyoaks Music Show! As Sonny Flood the bands mentor said on TV, it’s “amazingly ironic”.

Last but by no means least, there’s also a video to Christmas Retreat, which you can view above. The video was filmed during their trips to Wales to record their Christmas single, and their earlier E.P ‘Because It’s Somewhere To Be’. While the camera work at times is a little suspect, it has everything you need for a good laugh. There’s a few quite frankly random moments in there; including Rich grappling with the attentions of a ferret, Matt posing with a can of beer, and a few santa hats and tinsel in evidence too.

If all this has got you in the festive spirit, and you feel like celebrating Christmas Library Suits style, then you can download the single now from I-Tunes, HMV, Play.com and all other good download sites.  For more information please visit www.myspace.com/thelibrarysuits. Support a brand new Christmas song this December, you know it makes sense!!
